In the period 301-305 The Downs were an Aethelnian province, named Merlinshire. During some period of history the territory of nowadays The Downs canton, was controlled by the important port town of Merlinburgh.
Symbols[]
Incorporates Merlinburgh symbols in it's greater coat of arms, due to their shared history. The lesser coat of arms (pictured) features Azure Three Crocodiles Passant Or, with on a chief Or a Lion Azure Passant.
The canton motto reads Luctor et Emergo, which translates from Lilliani into I Struggle and I Emerge.' A reference to frequent annual river floods of the rivers Aethel and Penelope which plague the canton, and local people's determination to overcome these floods.
