The revolution of 233 BP (typo!) overthrew the supposedly corrupt Deleste dynasty in the pre-plague kingdom of Liliana (typo: Neoliliana?). As rebellion spread across the nation, the last Deleste kings cracked down on the peasantry, passing tyrannical laws that restricted the historic rights and freedoms of the people. As conditions worsened, the people began to meet in secret, for public gatherings had been outlawed. In these secret gatherings, nobleman, merchant, crafter and serf all met as equals. Small parlours and clubs grew into secret meetings of cults, whose hatred of the monarchy grew with each passing year. They remained small cells of related citizenry, but they began to reach out to each other where they found allies and similarities in mind. When the monarchy finally fell, it was at the hands of the people in a mass uprising. The Societies, as they had come to be called, heard a mass call to arms and rose up against the king and his loyal nobles. There is considerable debate within Neoliliana itself over just which society began this call to arms, each society taking credit for itself. After the fall of the royal family, the societies were the ones to pick up the pieces. Although there was some squabbling and several societies were destroyed utterly, the majority of them came to a historic agreement which became the First Republic. Eventually, the secret societies, their purpose fulfilled, evolved into the political parties present in Neoliliana today, each with its own agenda for the nation, but each looking out for the people in its own way. Said 'evolution' came at the hands of a treaty signed with the Estontetsan empire, which allowed Neoliliana to retain its freedom if it got rid of the Societies. Despite this official history, the secret societies exist today; they are present in many areas of Neoliliani society: the universities, the military, the academics, big industry, crime families, and especially, the government.[3] |
Nobles and rich merchants were deliberately inciting the peasantry to revolt, to best make use of the weak king and destroy their rivals. When the revolution of 223 (typo!) succeeded, it took them by surprise, but, presenting their credentials as freedom fighters, they joined the government of the First Republic.[4]
When the First Republic was formed, AKEAN began to bring in new ideas and theories into Neoliliana, importing books and teachers from Lendia and Estontetso and attempting to educate the people. They were directly responsible for the spread of newspapers in Neoliliana both before and after the revolution, but have little if any control over the media today. The mass influx of ideas mostly bewildered and confused a largely illiterate and uneducated peasantry. New ideas spurred growth; the four-fold system of farming, the cotton gin, the water wheel, the leap year, standardized teaching, the first census of Neoliliana. Their attempts to reform also included the calendar, the hours of the day, the time farmers should plant their crops, measurements and lengths, standards and weights, and other ideas, such as requiring priests to swear allegiance to the state first, which roused the population against the government. Some ideas were welcome additions to Neoliliana that spurred forward an era of industrialization and freed up hundreds of thousands of farm workers; others caused unnecessary civil strife, and that, combined with their anticlerical outlook and the chaos caused by the influx of rural folk travelling to the cities for work caused the massive social changes that led to the disastrous war against Estontetso (322-315 BP) and the Second Republic (founded 314 BP).[5]
The revolution began. The soldiery as a whole had resisted the urge to form cliques and instead served their lords, or their cities, dutifully (more or less). During the revolution, there were mass desertions, betrayals and surrenders by these forces, perhaps as many as there were pitched battles and sieges. Among the intellectuals of the cities, especially, came the idea of a nation-state, that all the Lelane (Neoliliani) peoples should be united into a single state, transgressing (then-) current national borders. It was these intellectuals who sparked the flame of nationalism among the soldiers and mercenaries in Neoliliana and who spread the revolution outside the kingdom of Neoliliana to its neighbours. Although these revolts were quickly and mercilessly stamped out, they paved the way for the later wars that were fought between the First Republic and its neighbours, annexing first the Kingdom of Aurore, then the Kingdom of Goramia and finally, almost as an afterthought, the Grand Duchy of Estontalle. It was this latter conquest that would lead to the distastrous war with Estontetso (322-315 BP).[6]

314 BP[1] | Fondation of the Second Republic |
254 BP | Estontetso conquers nearly all of the Angliyodascunyan Crown. |
235 BP | Neoliliana conquers the Duchy of Garrafão (nowadays Esto's Republics of Botabaixo and Ressacadatosga). |

223 BP[9] if not a typo | Nobles and rich merchants were deliberately inciting the peasantry to revolt... |
222 BP | Rebellion in the north of the Liliani Empire leads to the establishment of the Duchy of Caritas. |
138 BP | Longerathian Wars end |
56 BP[10] | Garrafão reconquered by Estontetso. Alarmed that the next move could be towards the east, Neoliliana and Gorami established an alliance and married their prince heirs, thus uniting the two kingdoms (?!? time of the Second republic!!). |
