The Free Republic of Melga is a small, independent state on an archipelago called the Melga Islands, part of the Western Isles, west of central Longerath.
Geography of Melga[]
The Melga Islands are the result of the geological tensions that innundated the Sea of Blue Waters. They are geologically recent and it is possible that in the future they will unite in one sigle land. In fact, the island of Gramelga was thus formed, through the union through volcanism of several small sendimentary islands. The islands are moslty sedimentary, but in several of them there are clear remains of volcanic activity, including the three active volcanoes in Gramelga. The height of the islands increases from east to west and they lie roughly over three paralell lines running from north-northeast to south-southwest. The highest elevation is the Supa Volcanoe (3325m) in Gramelga. The only island with some relatively important hydrography is Gramelga, with some rivers coming down from the mountains into the Hat Bay.

The islands are quite well populated, particularly those where there is the heads of the provinces, that is, the largest cities. The smaller islands typically do not have permanent human occupation.
Nature Reserves[]
The Gramelgais Islets are a Republican Nature Reserve both above and under the sea.

Provinces of Melga[]
Politically, the Republic is divided into 5 provinces: Xata, which includes the islands of Xata and the three Belezoca islands, Vermelha which consists of the island of the same name, same thing with Gregorio, Gramelga consisting of the islands of Gramelga and Blin plus the Gramelgais Islets, and finally Fariles with the remaining islands.
The provincial capitals are at the same time the largest cities of the Republic. Overall, the population is very concentrated in the largest cities, and has increased considerably in the end of 297 due to a massive influx of refugees from Estontetso. Many of these refugees are already integrated in the Melgan society, but about half of them are in the process of returning to their country, and the island's population is decreasing slowly but stably.

History[]
Melga belonged to the Free Confederacy of Lendian Republics (FCLR) when it was invaded in early March 299 by the Communist West Uhlanian guerilla (FUC) which had staged a successful uprising in Percevejan. Confederate attempts to recapture the islands failed and were abandoned as the Lendian Confederacy was dissolved on March 13th. About four months later, in July 299, the Lendian Tigers, an ethnic Lendian group led by elements of the former Confederate army, captured Melga after a heavy bombardment by sea and airforces, as they also did with the Lok Islands (10 July) and Sag Islands, and proclaimed these two Free Republics as the Tiger Confederation.
After the Tiger Confederation lost their power and influence [sometime between 307 and 321], the islands established themselves as an independent nation.
Since then struggling to survive on its own, the islands became home of pirates, maybe former Tiger warriors. After several incidents involving Estontetsan merchant ships, Estontetso in January 322 invaded the islands and erected a protectorate. The protector, Count Biseuro, called on the local authorities to build an interim parliament which will have to decide on Melga's future as either an independent nation, with or without Estontetsan protection, or as a part, a Constituent Republic, of the Federal Estontetsan Republic.
The mayor of Hat Nak, Vittorio Mercoledi (meanwhile President of the Free Republic), was elected president of the interim parliament consisting of Melga's joint mayors who are discussing changes to the old constitution. The first and unanimous decision (on 25 February 322) was to remain independent, in peaceful co-existence with all their neighbours.

Fishieries[]

Deep-Sea Fisheries Co.

Ensign for fishing craft within the territorial waters
The Sea of Blue Waters is fished by the busy fleet of Deep-Sea Fisheries Corporation while the private and co-operative fishermen in the proximity even fly their own special ensign.

... and wool. More than human sense can grasp.
Shipping Companies[]
Melga as a group of islands depends largely on water transport between the islands as much as to and from them.
Air Traffic[]
MELGA AIR, the national airline which still operates Lendosa Aviation arircraft in use since the times Melga was part of the FCLR, operates relations to all relevant destinations, like Duceta (Estontetso, see timetable).
Tourism[]
Must-haves[]
Melga is home to the vex-famous Peach Melga - a desert of peach halves on hazelnut ice cream with caramel and chocolate sauce. TECH: not to confound with Peach Melba which is known from the Earth RPG as tender and very ripe peaches on vanilla ice cream with a topping of sugared raspberry purée.
Every tourist is nearly expected to buy one of the famous Melgaran hand-knit water-tight woollen fisherman sweaters.
