Eras is Vexillium's largest and most populous continent. It covers 0.0% of Vexillium's total surface area (or 0.0% of its land area) and, with an estimated 1.2 billion people, it contains more than 30% of Vexillium's documented human population. Split between the northern and southern hemispheres, Eras is bounded to the west by the Futuronian Ocean, to the east by the Cisgronkian Ocean, to the south by the Meridic Ocean, and to the north by the Polaris Ocean. Given its size and diversity, Eras – a toponym dating back to classical antiquity – is as much a cultural concept incorporating a number of regions and peoples than a homogeneous physical entity.
Etymology[]
Eras had been known by Futuronian societies as the "Old continent" referring to its alleged role in being the origin of civilisation and humankind on Vexillium. However, the term Eras has slowly gained prominence through geographical societies' use of the term.
The word is first documented in Ishrakan, Eras's south-eastern-most corner, where Utani scholars documented, circa 1915 BP, the name of the massive landmass on which their homeland was found as Eras. However, other scholars believe the word shares the root word with Esren, meaning foreigner, and that Eras originally referred to the lands of the foreigners.
The word found its way through trading routes, and later the conquest of much of Ishrakan by the Utani Empire. It was adopted in more recent years as the term to describe the continent that until then had no internationally accepted name.
