El Torneo (Ingallish: The Tournament, Mixtupteca: Uey Ixkomalistli, Welfenian: An Farpáis, Gorami: Das Turnier, Vinnish: Mótið) is the top-level football competitive event organized in TDCorp territory by the OTM (Otéagu Tlachtli Mecatlaxalli, Otéagan Football League).
El Torneo usually takes place in October-November of each year, being held in rotation at each of the regions that have organized leagues under the OTM’s supervision: Coastal, Miner’s, Welfenia, and Desert (New Territories). Due to the extreme popularity of the sport, each region has a number of stadiums that can hold 40,000-plus spectators, and the regional football teams pool their resources to put together extravagant and spectacular activities surrounding each yearly tourney.
El Torneo is currently played in a Cup format, with a group phase where teams selected by lots are grouped and then play the other teams in their group, and a knockout phase where the 2 teams with the most points in each group play against each other in one match per round (Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Final), with the winners of each match advancing to the next round. A third-place match is played between the losers of the 2 semi-finals. The final match winner is crowned Champion, and earns the right to participate in the next Tournament without having to qualify.
Qualification to the Tournament is automatic for the teams placed first to third in each League competition, and each League sends its fourth-placed team to the Fourth Places Mini-Tournament, where the teams play each other in a League format, and the 3 teams with the most points advance to the Tournament proper.
All matches in the Mini-Tournament and the group phase award points: 2 points for a win, 1 for a tie and 0 points for a loss. The tiebreaking criterion is goal difference, regardless of number of goals scored; when goal difference is equal, a tiebreaking game is scheduled, with extra time and penalty shots (called 11ems after the Gorami “Elfmeter”) played if the end result is a tie.
The knockout phase matches are played with the option of extra time and penalty shots to break a tie, using the IVEFA standards for these options.
